William Blakley (1898 - 1976), a Dallas businessman, was born in Missouri, worked as a young ranch hand in Oklahoma and then served his country in World War I.
Later, after being admitted to the bar in 1933, Mr. Blakley joined a Dallas law firm and by 1957 was a hugely successful Texas entrepreneur.
He was also appointed twice to fill vacated seats in the US Senate.
But, perhaps what he is best known for today are nine simple words he spoke about the uniqueness of the Lone Star State.
These words are true and likely resonate clearly in the hearts of most Texans today.

On my quest to see all 89 Texas state parks this year, I’m discovering a common thread.
Each park feels like a hidden gem, like it’s been quietly tucked away on a scenic backroad, patiently waiting to be discovered.
Some are hilly, some are wooded, and others even offer paved trails.
And then there’s Colorado Bend. This place looks like the set of a Wild West movie. If we had brought a tent, we surely would have pitched it.
Because as I took in the sunny afternoon view of the river’s bend for as far as my eye could see, I also wondered what the stars must look like way out there against the dark of a Texas night.
If you enjoy primitive camping, huge shade trees that rustle in a breeze, secluded hike and bike trails, and the sound of a low river meandering through a high canyon, this Texas State Park might just be calling your name.
Reserve a camping spot soon. They’re booked on weekends up to five months in advance.

𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐦’𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝 - 𝐒𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐎𝐟 🍎
Did your mom ever make an apple salad with miniature marshmallows in it?
Mine did.
It was the perfect side for either Saturday’s hot dogs or Sunday’s fried chicken.
Here’s a healthier version of my mom’s apple salad (and maybe yours):
🍎 1 large chopped apple
🍎 2 slices Swiss cheese or mozzarella sticks, cut in small rectangles or coins
🍎 2-3 Tablespoons good mayonnaise
🍎 Generous 1/4 cup Texas pecans, whole or chopped
🍎 1/4 teaspoon salt
🍎 Small squeeze of lemon
Mix together and eat it with a spoon, out of the bowl, or make it suitable for Sunday dinner by generously scooping the salad onto a bed of fresh spinach, which has been lightly drizzled with olive oil.
