During February in Texas, the weather can be iffy or spiffy – all in the same hour! Yep, it can be snowing in the morning and change to shorts-temperature by mid-afternoon. The good thing is, if you’re looking for a good place to enjoy the month of February, you can’t get any better than the Lone Star State. We’ve got hot, and we’ve got cold. And if you get tired of one, the other is just down the road.
Here’s just a snippet of the fun that can be had during February in Texas. And, don’t worry. If you start havin’ so much fun you can hardly stand it? Well, there’s plenty more where that came from.
Lunar New Year
Celebrate Lunar New Year on February 2 at Galleria Dallas. There will be a spectacular performance by HD Lion Dance at 2:00pm, which features a lion and dragon dance, a drum show, kung fu and a parade. All that takes place at center court this Saturday, while the grand red lantern display will be up through February 10.

Watch the Game
Host your own Super Bowl party, or head over to Houston’s Hard Rock Cafe. Are you a 49er’s fan? Or are the Chiefs your team? Make your reservations here for the game day Tailgate Menu featuring all the football-watching favorites like wings, sliders, cheese fries and more.

Full Moon Hike
Texas State Parks are amazing places, designed for visitors to enjoy being outdoors in beautiful settings. At Palmetto State Park in Gonzales, the Rangers offer a few guided Full Moon Hikes during the year. On February 9, starting at 8:00 pm and ending at 10:00, a park Ranger will expertly guide you and your group as you explore the trails and see the Ottine Swamp by the light of a full moon. This experience is free with regular admission to the park.

Take a Date
Oh, goodness. Is there anything more symbolic of Texas than The Big Texan Steak Ranch? Panhandle people know it well, and, of course, lots of Texans from the southern parts of the state do, too. Who can travel to the Colorado mountains without a stop in Amarillo? So, if you’re going north (or live anywhere close by), why not make this February in Texas a little extra Lone-Star-Special by having a big ol’ juicy Valentine’s Day steak at The Big Texan? Of course, you can try to get the 72-oz steak for free, but I’m not sure that would be all that romantic. Or maybe it is? This is Texas after all.

Taste Some Wine
The weather during February in Texas is typically pretty darn perfect in the Hill Country. That means now is the perfect month to experience Texas Wine Trail’s Wine Lovers Celebration. There are lots of benefits behind a purchased ticket, and each ticket is valid from February 7 – February 23. If you’ve ever wanted to spend a few days visiting Texas’ finest wineries, now is such a good time to do it. Many of my personal favorites are on the list, like Grape Creek, Torr na Lochs, Perissos and, yep, quite a few more. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Swing a Club
If you’re a golfer, you probably have a favorite local course, but if you’re a golfer looking for a little intentional adventure, head to San Antonio. February in Texas is the perfect time for a round at one of the San Antonio areas many beautiful spots to swing a club. If you can make it a weekend getaway, all the better.

Pull up those Wranglers and put on your boots, Pardners. There are a few days left to enjoy Fort Worth’s Stock Show and Rodeo! Belt it Out
The Pointer Sisters have been performing together for many years, but we who are Over Fifty know them best by the group’s smash hits of the ‘80s. On February 20, these accomplished ladies will be performing at UT Cowan Center in Longview. Get your tickets here, and, of course, keep your vocal chords healthy until you go. There will be much opportunity to belt it out from your seat while the Sisters are on the stage. Planning to eat dinner before the show? Try Tuscan Pig, a recommendation which comes from a very reliable source: a soul sista from high school. Thanks, Clair!

Get All Jazzy
When Mike and I moved to Austin in 2014, we faithfully listened to a morning show on a local cable network while we were getting ready for work. That’s where I first heard the voice of Kat Edmonson. She was on tour, scheduled to perform at Austin City Limits, and they were showcasing just a bit of her incredible talent. If you love a unique, soulful, sultry sound, I think you’ll like Kat Edmonson as much as I do. And if you can snag tickets to see her February 19th show at the historic Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue in Austin, you will be one very lucky duck. Check out this video of Old Fashioned Gal from Ms. Edmonson’s latest album.
Cheer the Bears
Is there any better thing to do during February in Texas than to watch some good basketball? Not if you’re a Baylor Bear! The Bears are looking especially good this season, ranked #2 in the nation. If you’re looking for something super fun to do, head on over to Ferrell Center in Waco to see who wins the match between Baylor and KU. If you have to, you can bribe someone to go along, with the promise of a stop at Magnolia Market afterwards. Tickets for the game on February 22 at 11:30 go on sale February 3 at 2:30.
