Enjoy Downtown Austin on a Weeknight Walk

“And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares that infest the day,
Shall fold their tents like the Arabs,
and silently steal away.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

If you’re like us, when we’re about to go on vacation, we Google what there is to do in the city we’ll be visiting. There are always a few great lists, like Top 10 Things to Do in Paris, Texas.  These recommendations are like the greatest hits on the town’s playlist, and it’s always fun to plan a trip around them.  While I don’t think it’s on Austin’s Top 10 Things to Do, walking the Capital streets is one of our favorite Austin pastimes, like maybe #11. Although on any given night, it could move right up to #1.

Never Gets Old

Like a song that never gets old, hearing the lyrics a little differently every time you play it, so is life at night in Austin. Especially downtown.

Weeknights are my favorite.  No skirmishing, no skittishness, no skeedaddling.  People are leisurely enjoying dinner at sidewalk tables, tree lights reflecting through their wine goblets. Restaurant owners are in-house, and they love to come out on weeknights to thank their regular customers.  The atmosphere is just plain neighborly.

There are plenty of restaurants, bars and music if that’s what you’re looking for.  But sometimes – or often – a little after-dinner walk along a tree-lit city street is just what I need to regroup, refresh and reboot.

Ahhhhh.  The night is filled with music, and the cares of the day have stolen far, far, far away.
