66 Faith-Building Verses to Memorize With Kids [#5 Deuteronomy 6:5]

Dear Parent or Grandparent: This is #5 in a series of 66 Faith-Building Bible Verses to Memorize With Kids. The thread that weaves itself through these verses, one from each book of the Bible, has been designed to create a heart of strong faith in you and the children you love as you commit them to memory together.  May God add his blessing to every word. THE VERSE Deuteronomy 6:5  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  THE STORY One of the incredible things about the

An Honest Review of Untuckit – Part 3 of 4 Great Places to Treat the Man in Your Life

"Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society." - Mark Twain Idea #3 on my list of  great Austin places to treat the man in your life fits right in with the theme of the previous two. These ideas won't break the bank, don't require dressing up, and they won't cause your man to feel fussed over too much. Manly men just don't require a lot of fussing over. In fact, They will usually appreciate any old crumbs you throw their way. If you've already treated the man in your life to a hot, lathered

#3 and #4 – Leviticus 20:7 and Numbers 14:18 – The Rules and the Redemption of God

(Note: In order to share all 66 verses I'm memorizing with my granddaughter this year, I'll have to double up a time or two.  This is a good time to combine two verses into one week, because these two principles go together like a hand in a spiritual glove. God's requirements for man - and God's provision when man just doesn't measure up.) Verse #3 Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God.   Leviticus 20:7 I have loved being a parent, but I haven't done everything right - or at times even well! While

Coffee and Dessert at Cipollina (a West Austin bistro)

I haven't yet reached the place in blogging where people pay you to write nice things about them.  However, I've already decided what I will say when that time comes. I will only write about you if I can say nice things.  Especially when it comes to restaurants, I know that people work hard for their money, so I just don't want to call attention to any of them in a negative way.  We can leave that to the health department. If you see it on my blog, you'll know it was good. Even if they pay me to say it.  Now that we have that

4 Great Places to Treat the Man in Your Life (Part 2)

We have a running joke between us. My man has a natural instinct for what works and what doesn't. What should be watched out for and what should be jumped into. What's gonna stink and what's gonna smell like roses. Except when it comes to movies.  We don't know how this can happen so inexplicably often, but he just can't pick a movie. We've sat through some really long and grueling this-is-two-hours-of-my-life-I'll-never-get-back films, preceded by him begging me to let him try just one more time. This one will be good, he

#2. Exodus 34:14 – The Jealousy of God

My idea of memorizing a verse from each book of the Bible with my granddaughter required some research on my part. In my mind, there was no way to overstate the importance of the scripture selection or understate the impact those scriptures would have over the course of her lifetime. was I supposed to narrow down, from every rich page of God's holy word, just 66 verses for us to memorize?  Taking this job anything but lightly, I took my time and asked God for his direction. Here are the four criteria I used in

Soup and Sandwich – at Garbo’s Food Truck

There are at least two things about parenting that they just don’t tell you in the manual.  1. You can’t really practice ahead of time how to use a rectal thermometer.   2. PTA will wear you completely out... in a very good way. The year we moved to the country so that our 5th grade son could raise and show pigs (yikes!), our rural school district was bursting at the seams. There were three schools in the district: elementary, middle and a brand new high school.  That meant that the parent/teacher organizations had to work

4 Great Places to Treat the Man in Your Life (Part 1)

Don't ask ME how a man with a foot-long beard can be an expert on a straight-razor shave. Don't ask ME what it is about a barber shop that draws tattoo-clad stylists. Don't ask ME why I never knew it was such a big deal. But, do ask me if your man will like it. I will tell you, straight-up, that your man will love a straight-razor shave at Finley's Barber Shop. Remember how Andy Griffith was always hanging with his peeps at Floyd's barber shop? Well, I guess this is why.  No women, no pink, no

#1. Genesis 1:1 – In the Beginning

In the beginning. Three very powerful words. Pregnant with possibility, those words. In the beginning, I had no idea how we had gotten there.  After a long, hard haul... After a season of much despair... After dinners with consoling friends... After long bubble baths in a tub full of tears... And after counseling with our pastor... She was born.  Three very powerful words. Packed with possibility, those words. Together, we started afresh. Together, we napped while her Mama was at work. Together we danced

Chicken and Waffles at Forthright

Living the urban lifestyle in downtown Austin is an emptynester's dream. The moon is bright in the morning sky, and the pool lights reflect on the leaves of every cherished tree surrounding it. Whenever we get ready for a big weekend breakfast after a long walk around Lady Bird Lake, there are a jillion places in walking distance. However, there's only one with this kind of chicken and waffles. It's called Forthright. With a Name Like Forthright, It's Gotta be Good At the previous law firm where I worked, we had a white board.
